weekly challenge

Week 6 Challenge: Band

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

A band! So instead of doing a bitchin’ performance scene like Mike did, I went more the poster route. Yes, their name is Buttonville.

Buttonville first made an appearance in my NaNoWriMo novel a couple of years back. They would probably never actually be on a poster, as their main point was that they’re terrible. Next week: whatever Mike decides on, because he’s indecisive!

Week 5 Challenge: Modern Myth

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Playin’ with ink again! My feelings on this one are iffy, but overall, I think it’s okay – I’m not a great inker, but I’m learning and learning is good.

The theme was modernized mythological characters, so here’s a faun reimagined as a street musician.

Observe as Mike goes all anime. And awesome. (Also, he did this adorable comic about us and a dancing robot. And it actually happened. But it has nothing to do with the challenge.) Next week: a band!

Week 4 Challenge: MST3k Titles

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

The challenge this week was to do stuff based on the titles of movies that were mocked on Mystery Science Theatre 3000… I chose Fire Maidens from Outer Space and, uh, man this went somewhere weird. It looks like stained glass… in the weirdest church on earth.

Mike’s is cooler.
Next week: Modernized Mythological Creatures! Or something like that.

Week 3 Challenge: Epic Mounts

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Epic! Is it a giant badger ridden by a normal-sized child? A normal-sized badger ridden by a very small child? The world may never know!

I was worried about the fur, but it turned out that the metal was more my undoing. Also, my weak understanding of badger anatomy. On the whole, though, Kim is happy.

Badgerbadgerbadgerbadgerbadger.

See Mike’s truly “epic” mount here. Next week: MST3k episode titles!

Week 2 Challenge: The 1920s

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

True story: When I suggested this theme for the week, I was thinking I’d do something girly and innocent to offset last week’s leather wonder.

But then I found a picture of a 1920s motorcycle. A beautiful, beautiful 1920s motorcycle.

So, yeah.

For those who’ve known me online, no, I didn’t just title this picture after my former-and-sometimes-current online name. It’s actually called an Ace. Eeee.

Here’s Mike’s shot for the week. Movie poster ahoy.

Next challenge, as selected by Mike: Epic Mounts!

Week 1 Challenge: Demon Girl

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Through some bizarre twist of fate, my friend/summer roommate Mike and I ended up with the same co-op job – drawing cartoony kids and animals for Junior Jetsetters. Because this is kind of outside our own, normal styles we decided we’d do a weekly challenge, for kicks and portfolio pieces. This was the first challenge and, although he doesn’t know it, it’s all Jesse’s fault. Really.

It’s weird for me to draw something so unabashedly sexy; that’s usually not my thing. But every once in a while, it’s nice to make friends with the tropes I usually battle against and just do something fun.

Oh, and the eyes? Well, if I didn’t bite the trope that feeds me and try to subvert at least a LITTLE, well, I wouldn’t be me.

Check out Mike’s shot here.
It’s a bit NSFW. Week 2 challenge? The 1920’s! GO!
