Illustration Friday: Idle

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

For some reason all I want to do right now is draw adorable children. What’s up with that?

Idle

Was planning to (and still will, I think) do this in my usual inky style, but for some reason, I decided to do this up as a digital painting, and throw it up for Illustration Friday. She oughta look a little familiar. Been playing with her as a character. Her name is Penelope or Penny or something, and she is obsessed with aliens and ghosts and things, all in an effort to discover why the hell her pigtails hover.

Illustration Friday: Hollow

I haven’t done a digital painting in so long. Man, I need to spend like a week doing nothing but draw faces.

Hollow

This Illustration Friday brought to you by my inner emo kid. This one was a quickie, maybe an hour, hour and a half?

I’ve got a blog and portfolio revamp coming (yes, again) so look for that soon! I’m in a real tidying sort of mood, cleaning up my room, cleaning my websites; I need to feel refreshed, I think.

Illustration Friday: Time

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Okay, so to the handful of people who read this blog regularly, this oughta look pretty familiar.  Yep, it’s true: I’ve redone that four seasons picture yet again, and happily it corresponds well with this week’s Illustration Friday theme.  This is the final time; I swear.  I still don’t know if I’ve got it to the point where I’m willing to put it in my portfolio – it may be flawed at more basic levels than that – but at least I feel I’ve taken it as far as I can and it’s certainly an improvement on the first two iterations.

Oh, and another reminder that I’m now taking character commissions. I will draw you pictures!

Flawed

First thing to come to mind this week was the idea of a flawless diamond, and that evolved into this. Sometimes it’s fun to just sit down and do a simple illustration, beginning to end, just for kicks…

In other news, I’ve decided to whore myself out for cash – I’m taking character commissions. The prices are crazy cheap! Get yer characters here! No bites yet; I’m only planning to take on a handful at a time anyhow. Gotta concentrate on schoolwork after all. The end of fourth year approaches… eep.

Illustration Friday: Pale

Wednesday, January 21st, 2009

Okay, so I sort of cheated and did a combo thing this time – I wanted to do Illustration Friday and I was struggling with an idea for a valentine to submit for grad sales, so I decided to combine the two. What came out was, uh, I’m not sure, really.

Valentine

She’s not as pale as I meant her to be, but that’s mostly because I got really frustrated with the sketch, anatomy issues and the like, so I scanned it anyhow and threw textures at it until I felt better. I have such odd forms of therapy…

Illustration Friday: Rambunctious

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Oddest Illustration Friday topic I’ve seen to date, and my response isn’t exactly awesome, but I’m on Christmas break now. I do what I WANT. Woo!

Punk

Pencil and watercolour in my sketchbook. Didn’t plan to take it this far, but I was inspired and having fun and things.

I was trying to find some reference of 80’s punk clothing for something else I’ve been toying with, and I came across this picture, which I found weirdly adorable. So this is sort of a rough amalgamation of those two girls. I’m not sure exactly how rambunctious the result is, but what the hell, “rambunctious”? Really? Could be stranger, I suppose. Apparently one synonym is “obstreperous”.

Illustration Friday: Late

Late

When I first saw this week’s Illustration Friday topic I had a different idea, and I got two-thirds of the way through a sketch involving Victorian zombies (huh?) before I came across this in its unfinished state – begun for a previous Illustration Friday theme (”Packed”) – and decided I liked this much better. So ironically, it’s just an old one, finished late. I think it fits this fine anyhow. The train is late again, poor woman.

This was fun. It’s nice to play and experiment without worrying about a teacher’s approval or, indeed, any real consequences whatsoever save for my own amusement.

Sugary

Haven’t done anything for Illustration Friday since FOREVER, so here’s a quickie for this week’s topic, Sugary. Who doesn’t love a delicious lollipop? Don’t worry, little gothboy, I won’t tell.

Brushpens in my sketchbook with a 5-minute digital thing slapped on at the end.

Illustration Friday: Homage

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

This is an older piece from last summer, and it’s already up on my website, but I’m reposting it for this week’s Illustration Friday topic, “Homage”.

A homage to one of the most outlandish scenes of one of my favourite shows, Torchwood… as well as an homage to the old-fashioned pulp covers that it reminded me of, and that I really love. While I’m not a huge fan of reading this sort of old school sci-fi, there’s something about the sheer freedom and excitement of it that I just love.

Illustration Friday: Excess

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

Something for Illustration Friday, this week’s topic being “Excess”. And, uh, it took a long time. An excessive amount of jewelry means an excessive amount of time to draw it, I suppose.

Ink! Every once in a while, I get an urge to learn to use the stuff. Lately I’ve been hooked on the work of Matthew Woodson and Becky Cloonan, not to mention I bought Faith Hicks’ Zombies Calling (which I highly, highly recommend). So now I’m going through another “Must! Learn! Ink!” phase. It’s slow going indeed…
